Beach hut life can be every bit as wonderful as the Instagram images make it look. Who wouldn’t want a place on the beach to call their own?
Even just for the day.
- Somewhere to sit and watch the world
- Your own private picnic location
- A piece of seaside real estate to call your own
- Shelter if the wind gets up
Rent a beach hut for a day or a week
When you’re only visiting the seaside for a day or a week, it doesn’t make any sense to own a beach hut or even join the long queues for permanent rental.
In 2022 a beach hut at Mudeford went on the market for £440,000.
Most beach huts aren’t the type you can stay in overnight but the good news is you don’t have to rent a chalet for the whole season; you can rent a beach hut in South Devon for a day or a week, depending on how long you’re staying.
And you won’t need a mortgage to do so.
Beach huts to rent in South Devon near train stations
Even better news is that some beach huts are located on beaches near enough to train stations for you to travel car free to your dream seaside home-from-home.
We’ve pulled together a few favourites.
It’s worth noting most of these rental beach huts are empty, have water nearby but not necessarily at the hut, and aren’t available (or big enough) for overnight sleeping.
(All prices are 2024 peak season ones.)

Whether you choose the fun of the fair at Dawlish Warren or the quiet tradition of Coryton Cove, you’ll find plenty to occupy yourself at these two, very different sandy beaches.
And if you feel so inclined you can even take a unique walk along the sea wall between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren before catching the train back.

Torbay beach huts near train stations
Preston beach huts
Loved by generations of Torbay locals, Preston beach is away from the hustle and bustle of Paignton’s main beach but still only a short walk from Paignton train station. With a prom and a green as well as a sandy beach, Preston is the perfect place for family beach hut fun.

The walk from Paignton train station to Goodrington beach is a little bit longer but it offers plenty of quintessentially English seaside views. Wander round Paignton harbour to enjoy the views from Roundham gardens, then it’s down the slopes to expansive Goodrington beach.
Don’t forget to sample the local delights at Cantina Goodrington, my favourite beach cafe.
